Justin Timberlake: Following the Olympians
If the best party you'd ever attended took place at a cavernous out-of-town nightclub complex, would you want to keep going back there for other, less significant social occasions? Especially if a change of management had slashed the capacity and got rid of two of the dance floors?
It is settling into a new and, hopefully, more conducive home, after leaving behind Hyde Park's draconian restrictions on time and amplification.
With its 10 long tracks (most of them upwards of seven minutes) and meticulous production courtesy of Tim "Timbaland" Mosley (who seems hell-bent on atoning for the cynicism of much of his recent work by fashioning a sumptuous tribute to Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder and Prince), Timberlake's third album, The 20/20 Experience – released in March – has been as reliable a multi-million seller as 2007's FutureSex/LoveSounds.
True, the spring-heeled promise of Timberlake's 2002 debut, Justified – the most spectacular step up from group to solo endeavour since Michael Jackson's Off the Wall – has been dissipated slightly through his ensuing ventures in eco-minded golf courses, workmanlike movies and Southern Hospitality restaurants.
But the live stage should offer Timberlake a timely escape route from corporate diversification into what he does best.
