Plans underway for exact replica of Victorian Crystal Palace which housed 1851 exhibition

While the building, boasting 300,000 panes of glass, was first built in Hyde Park, it was moved to Crystal Palace in southeast London, where it remained until it burnt down in 1936.

According to Property Week ZhongRong is in early discussions to develop the project, and wants Crystal Palace to hold events and exhibitions.

It plans to submit a planning application by the end of this year.

Ellie Brabin, whose grandfather cycled to watch he palace on the night it burnt down, told The Times: "It has a presence like a ghost here sometimes.

"There is a little museum in the park which shows you what it used to be like.

"You can buy posters of the palace in the library and the railway station at Crystal Palace is so grand.

"You just get the sense this used to be a real destination."

The Great Exhibition of 1851 displayed some 100,000 objects, heralding Britain's wealth and prestige.
