The Masque of Anarchy, Manchester International Festival, review

What eerily perfect timing. Actress Maxine Peake, good in everything she does, recited Shelley's The Masque of Anarchy for the first time in public at the Albert Hall in Manchester on the same day that world-renowned Pakistani schoolgirl Malala Yousafzai stood before the UN in New York and eloquently argued for universal education.

Though almost 200 years separate Shelley's poem, written in response to the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, and Malala's words, they derive from the same source: a deep, simple, untutored passion for justice, truth and common dignity. Indeed Malala cited the example of Gandhi, who himself quoted Shelley's work and drew inspiration from the poet's rallying cry for non-violent resistance.
