Family Film Club: Planes: Fire & Rescue
Dir: Roberts Gannaway; Starring: Dane Cook, Ed Harris, Julie Bowen, Curtis Armstrong, John Michael Higgins, Hal Holbrook, Wes Studi, Teri Hatcher, Stacy Keach (voices). U cert, 84 mins
Planes 2: Fire & Rescue is the second instalment from DisneyToons, the straight-to-DVD arm of Disney/Pixar, hanging on to the coat-tails of Lightning McQueen and the Cars franchise. In the last movie we met Dusty Crophopper, a crop-duster who realises his dream of becoming a star racer. In Planes 2, Dusty's racing days are over due to a faulty gearbox that is no longer in production. Dusty now wants to become a firefighter and his adventures begin.
Disney's tried and tested underdog story get another outing in this "world above cars" sequel, and Dusty meets lots of new friends along the way.
Harry, 12, lost interest and commented that it was drawn out, a bit boring and much the same as the last film: it wasn't very funny, but the animation was great.
However, Tom, 5, absolutely loves Dusty and this film (being a Cars/Planes obsessive it was always going to be the case, regardless of the film's content).
Being a cynical dad - and someone who has spent a fortune on various movie tie-in figures and playsets - I can see further instalments of the Planes franchise with plenty more Dusty Crophopper toys, games, and pyjamas to be sold by Disney.
Overall, Planes 2 is a nice story of friendship, and the underdog overcoming adversity, with beautiful animation. Disney's loose attempt at dealing with a disability works well for the very little ones. According to Harry, this film would suit children of ages four to nine.
