Scotland: songs for staying together

Scotland, Rick Astley knows how to show that a full commitment is what this is all about. After all, your heart's been aching, but you're too shy to say it. Now it's time for everyone to have a good dad dance together and a bit of a cuddle afterwards.

Lover You Should Have Come Over - Jeff Buckley

A song full of heart-wrenching regret, lust and even a little love, Buckley paints a convincing campaign for a spurned lover: it's not too late to fall in love again. Go on, eat a shortbread biscuit.

With or Without You - U2

This is the song that Ross requested be played on a radio station to win Rachel back during the infamous "on a break" episode of Friends. Admittedly it didn't work, but the lyrics are a poignant evocation of the campaign: "Through the storm, we reach the shore/ You gave it all but I want more/ And I'm waiting for you".

Wherever You Will Go - The Calling

So Scotland is stuck to England, Wales and Northern Ireland forever. The Calling make that prospect seem romantic: "In your heart, in your mind/ I'll stay with you for all of time", they sing. Which is sweet.

Reunited - Peaches & Herb

Key lyrics to sing along to here: "Reunited and it feels so good/ Reunited 'cause we understood/ There's one perfect fit/ And, sugar, this one is it." Hurrah!

Sunshine on Leith - The Proclaimers

One for the Embra natives from the twin kings of the singalong Caledonian anthem. It tells a tale of beautiful union (after the sorrow of the independence campaign): "My tears are drying, my tears are drying... While I'm worth my room on this earth/ I will be with you."

Waterloo - ABBA

ABBA's sense of desperation here would be appropriate for plenty of disappointed Yes voters: "Waterloo, couldn't escape if I wanted to/ Waterloo, knowing my fate is to be with you..."

Let's Stay Together - Al Green

This classic is full of the joys of being together forever: "Oh let's, let's stay together/ Lovin' you whether, whether/ Times are good or bad, happy or sad, alright, oh yeah."

You're the One That I Want from Grease

The best song from Grease gets to the nitty-gritty of the campaign issues in fine style: "Cause the power you're supplying [through a combination of North Sea oil and a growing industry of renewable resources], it's electrifying!"
