Shakespeare's Globe up for eight Tony Awards

Shakespeare's Globe has been nominated for a remarkable eight Tony Award for its first foray onto Broadway, as the likes of Mark Rylance, Stephen Fry prove British theatre still dominates the world stage.

It has now been recognised alongside a host of other British actors, directors and producers at the prestigious awards, with nominations in categories from best play revival to best actor and best supporting roles.

His co-star Samuel Barnett, best-known for his role in The History Boys, received a best actor nomination for his portrayal of Viola, while cast members Stephen Fry and Paul Chahidi also picked up supporting actor nods.

Twelfth Night will now compete in the best revival of a play category, alongside the Cripple of Inishmaan, The Glass Menagerie and A Raisin in the Sun.

Rylance will go up for best actor against Barnett, Chris O'Dowd, for Of Mice and Men, Bryan Cranston, for All The Way and Tony Shalhoub, for Act One.

Also representing Britain will be Sir Tim Rice, for his lyrics on the stage version of Aladdin, and Sir Cameron Mackintosh for Les Miserable.
