A new David Bowie song has been released online mere hours before the musician could potentially win the Mercury Music Prize 2013.
Bowie has shared about half of the new song, Atomica, as the backing track to an advert for his forthcoming release, The Next Day Extra. Nearly two minutes of the guitar-driven rock song can be heard, along with Bowie's vocals singing. "I'm just a rock star, stabbin' away" and a chorus of "Let's get this show on the road".
The Next Day Extra is an expanded, three disc version of The Next Day, Bowie's 24th studio album which is nominated for tonight's Mercury Music Prize after its release in March.
POLL: Who should win the Mercury Prize 2013
The new record will be available from November 5 and will include five new songs, including Atomica, two remixes and a DVD of music videos. When Bowie released his surprise comeback single, Where Are We Now, in January, he said he had been working on the new material in secret for two years.
More recently, Bowie has appeared as a guest vocalist on Arcade Fire's new album, Reflektor. It is unknown if Bowie will attend this evening's Mercury Music Awards, as the elusive musician has not performed publicly since 2006 and has been seen rarely in public since.
