The best new films on release in cinemas this week

Jane Horrocks and Peter Mullan in Sunshine on Leith

FILTH (18 cert, 97 min)

Dir: Jon S. Baird; Starring: James McAvoy, Imogen Poots, Eddie Marsan, Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Shirley Henderson, Kate Dickie, Martin Compston

James McAvoy has seldom been better than in this adaptation of Irvine Welsh's 1998 novel about a sociopathic police detective. Director Jon S Baird cleverly reshapes the novel for cinema while retaining all its bug-eyed grotesquery. Read The Telegraph's Filth review.

CAMP 14 (12A cert, 106 min)

Dir: Marc Wiese; starring Shin Dong-Hyuk

This harrowing documentary traces the life of a young man born into a brutal North Korean labour camp. He escaped at the age of 23. Clearly traumatised, he recalls terrifying experiences that started in his childhood, watching an execution. It's a clear condemnation of a regime that keeps its activities secret. FOR THOSE IN PERIL (18 CERT, 92 MIN)

Dir: Paul Wright; Starring: George MacKay, Kate Dickie, Jordan Young, Conor McCarron, Nichola Burley, Michael Smiley

Aaron, played by George MacKay, who also stars in Sunshine on Leith (see above), is the sole survivor of a fishing boat accident that has killed five men, including his older brother Michael (played in flashback by Jordan Young). The film is low on laughs, but what matters is that it is high on emotional truth, in both senses: there's plenty of it, and it swirls around your lungs with a narcotic allure. THANKS FOR SHARING (15 cert, 112 min)

Dir: Stuart Blumberg; Starring: Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joely Richardson, Alecia 'Pink' Moore, Josh Gad

Stuart Blumberg's debut film is a straightforwardly middlebrow romantic comedy which centres on three New York men in a 12-step sexual abstinence programme. Tonally the film is all over the rink, but it leaves you more convinced and entertained than you'd expect. Read The Telegraph's Thanks for Sharing review.
