Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, exclusive clip

On Thursday night, Idris Elba and Naomie Harris will appear on the red carpet at the premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. Based on the South African President's autobiography, the film has already become the country's all-time highest grossing picture following its release in November.

REVIEW: Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, "a sort of grandeur"

This clip shows the police action during the Sharpeville massacre of 1960, when police opened fire on thousands of protestors. The violence, which resulted in the death of 69 people, is now commemorated annually on March 21 in South Africa.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom follows Mandela's life from his childhood in the rural Eastern Cape, through his activism during the apartheid era and decades in prison, before being elected as South Africa's first black president in 1994.

Elba, 41, who plays the former president, has admitted that the role has made him more selective of his future film parts. He told the BBC, "After playing Mandela, it's very hard to read a script that doesn't have any of the qualities that man has."

"It's quite interesting what it's doing to my taste in characters."

The film will be released in UK cinemas on January 3.
