Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas: profile
His Oscar winning wife, 43, had treatment in 2011 for bipolar II disorder and checked into a mental health facility for further treatment in May.
She had previously spoken about her experience with the disorder, a milder form of the illness which is marked by sharp mood swings, erratic behaviour and episodes of depression.
Speaking in 2011 she said: "This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them. If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it."
In 2010 Douglas' son Cameron, 34, was sentenced to five years in prison for possessing heroin and dealing crystal meth, and a year later was given another four and a half years for admitting drug possession in prison.
His father failed to have his son's sentence reduced in April this year, which means he is unlikely to be released until 2018.
Douglas divorced his first wife Diandra in 2000, after they separated in 1995 after more than 20 years of marriage. Shewas awarded $44m in their divorce.
Douglas recently returned to the big screen in his role as Liberace in film Behind the Candelabra.
Zeta Jones was born in Wales and shot to fame in 1991 comedy drama The Darling Buds of May. After a series of appearances in films that were not very successful she had a breakthrough after starring in the Mask of Zorro alongside Antonio Banderas – which led to her eventually meeting her husband, Michael Douglas.
