Ivan Vasiliev: why I am so happy to return to the Bolshoi
The UK premiere of Alexei Ratmansky's version of The Flames of Paris, starring Ivan Vasiliev and Natalia Osipova is a fitting climax to the Bolshoi Ballet's London season at the Royal Opera House.
Vasiliev and Osipova are both returning to what Vasiliev calls their home company for the first time since they left in 2011, to join the Mikhailovsky Ballet.
That surprise departure followed their creation of the roles of the revolutionary hero and heroine in Ratmansky's reinterpretation of one of the most popular ballets of the Soviet period, made originally in 1932.
For Vasiliev, the part of Philippe is one of his favourites, full of masculine vigour and swirling leaps across the stage. The couple's performance of the famous pas de deux which celebrates their wedding is already legendary - and you can see them rehearsing it here.
